Suit Jacket Fit: Short, Regular and Long

A men's suit size such as 38S, 38R or 38L combines a nominal chest size (38 inches) with a length category (Short, Regular or Long).

Mr. 360 says: Don't increase your chest size just to get longer sleeves. Match the chest and shoulders first, then review the manufacturer's length chart.

How to interpret 38S vs. 38R vs. 38L

LabelNominal chestLength category
38S38 inchesShorter jacket body and sleeves
38R38 inchesRegular jacket body and sleeves
38L38 inchesLonger jacket body and sleeves

There is no universal sleeve length for 38S or 38L. Sleeve measurement depends on maker, construction and measurement method (shoulder-to-cuff or center-back-to-cuff).

Example numbers only; replace them with the values published on your preferred brand's chart. These are garment sleeve lengths, not your arm measurements.

How to measure

  1. Measure chest circumference with arms relaxed.
  2. Choose the chest size from the manufacturer's chart.
  3. Compare shoulder and sleeve measurements using the chart's specified method.
  4. Check the jacket body length and intended cut.

For a purchase, consult the official size chart for that specific jacket. See Brand Comparison Center.
