Suit Jacket Fit: Short, Regular and Long
A men's suit size such as 38S, 38R or 38L combines a nominal chest size (38 inches) with a length category (Short, Regular or Long).
Mr. 360 says: Don't increase your chest size just to get longer sleeves. Match the chest and shoulders first, then review the manufacturer's length chart.
How to interpret 38S vs. 38R vs. 38L
| Label | Nominal chest | Length category |
|---|---|---|
| 38S | 38 inches | Shorter jacket body and sleeves |
| 38R | 38 inches | Regular jacket body and sleeves |
| 38L | 38 inches | Longer jacket body and sleeves |
There is no universal sleeve length for 38S or 38L. Sleeve measurement depends on maker, construction and measurement method (shoulder-to-cuff or center-back-to-cuff).
